My Bucket List: Things I Want To Do Before I Die

Something happens the very minute we are born.  At that very moment, we begin to age and thus, every second, every minute, every hour of every day gets us closer to the day we will die.  Death isn't something most of us really like to think about, but it is only inevidable.  We are born to die.

As I write this blog, my 90 year old grandfather is at an Emergency Room.  He has been having health problems for awhile and has actually not been out of the hospital for very long.  His time may be nearing, only God knows exactly when that is, but one thing is for sure, he has lived a long life.  But it makes me wonder if he accomplished everything he wanted in his life or if it is even possible?

The Bucket List was a 2008 movie starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman.  The movie was about two terminally ill men who had a list of things they wanted to do before they "kicked the bucket".   Recently, in the same fashion, a terminally ill girl named Alice started a blog.  She has only 4 blog posts, but her blog has become one of the most popular.  This blog lists her bucket list and many of the things she has listed are little things.  She wants to have her hair done, get a back massage, and have a photo shoot.   These are all things that we take for granted every single day.  But should you have to wait until you know your time is nearing an end before you make a bucket list? Maybe our bucket list starts the day we are born. We begin to grow and we push ourselves as babies to learn to walk and talk. As we get older, we begin to have dreams. Perhaps at the moment we are born, we begin making our bucket list.

I am only 33 years old.  I am not ill or terminally ill and I hope I still have many years left here on this earth, but only God knows exactly when I will die.  So, I'm thinking, Why not start my bucket list now?  I have nothing to lose but maybe happiness for myself and the people who mean the most around me.  So, here it goes...

McKenna Cole's Bucket List

  1. To tell my kids I love them EVERY day.  I want them to always remember that they are the top priority in my life.  My life would be NOTHING without them.
  2. To tell my parents that I love them EVERY day and how much I appreciate everything they do and have ever done for me.  Lord only knows where I would be in life if it hadn't been for such wonderful parents.
  3. Find love.  Though many have come and gone in my life, I have yet to find that one true love.  I'm beginning to think he doesn't exist, but I still have to put him down on my bucket list anyway because a girl can always dream.
  4. Graduate College.  2014 seems like so far away, but I know with determination I will make it.
  5. Find a job that I love.  This almost seems impossible, but I am hoping one day I will find the dream job that I have always longed for.
  6. Go on a REAL vacation.  I want to take my kids on a vacation to somewhere we would all enjoy and actually have the money to do all the things we would want to do while we were there.
  7. Write a book.  It has always been a dream of mine to get published and be a well-known author.
  8. Start a charity or organization for single parents.  I know how hard it is being a single parent especially when you can't get government assistance.  I would like to be able to help other single parents like myself who struggle from paycheck to paycheck to make ends meet.
  9. Get married.  That seems simple enough, but it is harder for some than most people think.
  10. See my children grow up and live their dreams and find happiness.

That was a short bucket list.  Once I started thinking about EVERYTHING I wanted to do in my life, it was hard to stop writing things down so I cut it down to a Top 10.  Life is so short and it passes us by so quickly.  I can only hope that I achieve most of the things I want to do in my life and if I don't then atleast I can die happy, knowing I tried.

I would really recommend you check out the Day Zero project (www.dayzeroproject.com) It is all about making a list of 101 things you wish to achieve in 1001 days (about 3 years). It is a great way to make a sort of bucket list with a time frame to help keep you committed. Good luck to you and thanks for the read!
